My husband, Steve, and I had the pleasure of dining* at the newly re-opened My Thai restaurant, just north of Harbor East. My Thai took up residence in the former Tack Factory building in January 2013, a few years after the original Mt. Vernon location burned in a five-alarm fire in 2010.
I’d missed a food writers happy hour where the My Thai team introduced items from the new grill menu, which includes typical street food in Thailand.
Steve and I started with a few things from that menu, including silkworms, beef tongue, prawn, and lemongrass beef. I don’t eat red meat but did take a quick bite of both beef dishes. The lemongrass had the most amazing flavor; I’d love to see a lemongrass chicken offering. The tongue was good, but a little chewy for me. Steve loved it; he said that it was his favorite of the night. I prawn was literally one giant prawn. I had to eat it quickly to keep its eyes from staring at me …
We didn’t order the silkworms—they were just placed in front of us. I was definitely hesitant and made Steve try them first. He said that they weren’t chewy, so I went for it. They were SO good. The worms were light like popcorn and had a sweet soy glaze and a hint of cashew. Trust me on this one.
We also ordered from the regular kitchen menu. Steve sampled the fried calamari, which was airier than many heavily breaded variations. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps, which had a little spicy kick but tasted extremely fresh, and the mussels in a Thai basil broth, which smelled amazing and were HUGE. We also had delicious pork dumplings, and rounded out the meal with the most amazing sliced mango and sweet sticky rice.
We sampled several cocktails, including the Lychee Pear-tini and the Fire Fly, which is made with MyThai’s house-infused vodka. (We took a shot of it on its own and my mouth lit up from the peppers. Great flavors, but a little too intense for me.)
Honestly, this was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Everything was fresh and the spices added so much flavor to the dishes. I could constantly taste Thai basil, ginger, and other spices. The dishes were sized perfectly and were well-priced. (The mango and sticky rice was $5, cocktails were $8, and most items on the grill menu were $4-8.)
I recommend checking out My Thai ASAP. It’s a great date place and would be fun for a group of friends. Sit at the bar and watch the grill chef, Jarit, work his magic. Be open to trying new things!
*Because I missed the happy hour, our "street food" was comped, but we covered the cost of all cocktails and kitchen menu items.
