“Marley & Me” is one of the most popular true-to-life books that has a plot centered on a pet dog. “Marley & Me” tells the story of journalist Tom Grogan, his family, and their dog, Marley. The book is written in first-person narrative so the reader feels as if John Grogan is actually telling them the story in person that actually adds to the overall charm of “Marley & Me.”
The book takes place over a thirteen year span. In the beginning John and his wife, Jenny, adopt a golden Labrador puppy and name him Marley. It soon becomes clear that Marley is destined to be a very large and very strong dog with very little self-control (especially when it comes to food). Marley is destructive and boisterous but he is also loving and affectionate. When John and Jenny add three children to their family, Marley proves to be excellent with the children despite his girth.
“Marley & Me” is ultimately a story about a family and their pet dog. It is a book that will resonate with mostly anyone who has ever owned and loved a pet. It is the very simplicity and familiarity of the story that makes it so appealing to animal lovers and this explains how it skyrocketed to the “New York Times Best Seller List” upon its 2005 release. “Marley & Me” actually proved to be so effective with audiences that it was subsequently turned into a successful film in 2008 (see video).
Anyone who loves animals and stories about them should certainly read “Marley & Me” and, for young readers, there is even a child’s version intended for small children to be able to read on their own!
I give all the Marley brand (the adult book, the children’s book and the movie) 5/5 stars and urge all animal (especially dog) lovers to take some time to read and watch Marley-related media!
