Deloris Van Cartier’s outrageous, sequined dress is not the only thing that shines in the Tony award-winning musical, ‘Sister Act,’ which opened at the Boston Opera House on Tuesday, January 22 and continues through Sunday, February, 3. Whoopi Goldberg, star of the 1992 film adaptation, produces this Broadway sensation. Her trademark style is evident through the production’s snappy and clever dialogue.
Ta’rea Campbell, who performed as Nala in the national tour of ‘The Lion King,’ stars as Deloris Van Cartier, a diva turned nun in this musical comedy. Campbell brings a sassy, charismatic glow to Deloris Van Cartier, similar to Whoopi Goldberg’s portrayal. Her voice has a hint of Jennifer Hudson, soaring through songs such as ‘Take Me to Heaven,’ ‘Raise Your Voice,’ and ‘Sister Act.’ Campbell’s magnetic personality is the heart of this amazing show.
Each member of the cast possesses phenomenal vocal range! Kingsley Leggs adds a silky, sly style to the song, ‘When I Find My Baby’ as he portrays Deloris’ bad boy boyfriend Curtis. Lael Van Keuren plays Mary Robert with a voice that bursts into a soulful wail. E. Clayton Cornelious portrays Eddie Souther with goofy flair. Academy award-winning composer Alan Menken has created a catchy, passionate soundtrack that caused a rousing applause after each number.
The costumes and set pieces, in all their detailed and glimmering glory, seem to exude their own personality onstage. From a set that depicts a sprawling church to habits unlike anyone has ever seen, the costumes and sets tell their own story.
