Comedian and actor Bernie Mac was one of the funniest stars to grace the stage and screen during the last couple of decades.
Therefore, it is only fitting that director Robert Small's documentary “I Ain't Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac” is as funny as it is touching. Moreover, one need not have been a fan of Mac, who passed away in 2008 from complications associated with an inflammatory lung disease known as sarcoidosis, to enjoy the movie. However, you will be after bearing witness to his inspirational journey as traced in the film.
“I Ain't Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac,” which is now available on DVD at retail stores and rental outlets throughout the Valley, follows the development of the comedian's unique performance style and his rise to fame. The documentary unearths early footage and never-before-seen performances courtesy of Mac's friends and family, including his wife Rhonda McCullough and their daughter Je’niece McCullough.
In addition, the film features scenes from his better-known work – such as his television series and his major motion pictures – along with memories from his costars, colleagues and friends. Interviews include Anthony Anderson, Tom Arnold, Angela Bassett, Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Don Cheadle, Cameron Diaz, Mike Epps, Andy Garcia, D.L. Hughley, Samuel L. Jackson, Carl Reiner, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Steven Soderbergh.
The large turnout of Hollywood's best and brightest who honor Mac in “I Ain't Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac” demonstrates the spectacular significance of the comedian and actor's life. Listening to each of the interviewee's fond memories of Mac gives us a glimpse of how the man touched lives with laughter off of the stage and screen just as much as he did on them.
Small does not spend too much time on Mac's illness – a decision that is disappointing as it robs the viewer of the emotional release related to the loss of the comedian and actor. Ultimately, though, this keeps spirits high and makes “I Ain't Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac” more of a celebration than a mournful reminder.
And that is likely the way that the comedian and actor would have wanted it. After all, as the documentary shows, Mac was a man who loved life. His example encourages us to do the same.
