“How to Train Your Dragon” tells the tale of Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) a young Viking who befriends a dragon named Toothless. Soon, Hiccup and Toothless are taking to the skies, swooping and gliding across the water in several beautifully animated sequences.

The character work and storytelling is somewhat predictable, but what sets this apart from the usual Dreamworks fare is its character-based humor and refreshing lack of instantly dated pop culture jokes. The action and adventure, especially during the rousing finale, elevate the film. It’s the best Dreamworks animated film to date, and it’s even better than Pixar’s last couple of films.

As expected, the digital animation pops on Blu-Ray, and the sound mix is impeccable. This new Collector’s Edition features an upgraded 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track, and comes with a sticker on the slipcover offering $7.50 off a ticket to the upcoming sequel. The set also comes with over 90 minutes of bonus features, including the first episode of “DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk” and the animated adventure “Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon,” featuring the original voice cast.

A fun, exciting adventure for the whole family, “How To Train Your Dragon” is Dreamworks’ best film. You can view the teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel above. For the latest Blu-Ray news and reviews, subscribe to the Blu-Ray Examiner today.
