Rap-masters Cypress Hill made their annual Halloween visit to Time Square last night, driving the entire Best Buy Theater insane in the membrane under a cloud of sweet-smelling smoke.
Wednesday night’s show marked the 17th year B-Real and Sen Dog have played NYC the night before Halloween (read my 2010 review here) and while there were noticeably less fully-costumed fans than in previous years, the crowd danced and moshed to a setlist of some 20 hardcore hits like How I Could Just Kill A Man, Hand On The Pump, and of course radio favorite Insane In The Brain.
Backed by their drummer and DJ, the rappers bounced back and forth across the stage while trading off verses and the front row fans joined in and sang on every chorus. The fans also joined in on B-Real’s love of weed, with one fan even passing him several joints over the barricade while most of the crowd puffed away from front to back, to the point where you could smell the skunk from the second you walked into the building. (see photos on the left)
B-Real proudly lit up right on stage for the one-two combo of I Wanna Get High and Hits From The Bong, and by the time he started rapping through Dr. Greenthumb a lesser stoner wouldn’t have even been able to walk. But the energy in the room just grew stronger for the rest of the night, with a drum solo and the crushing bass from songs like Boom Biddy, Cock The Hammer, and Lick A Shot reverberating through the entire room and sending fans into a frenzy.
The heaviest songs were saved for last, and full mosh pits opened up for the heavy metal guitars on Rise Up and ultimate show-closer Rock Superstar. Kids slammed into each other and bounced off the crowd as everyone went wild and shouted along with the metal-loving rappers (watch my 2009 video interview with B-Real discussing his favorite heavy metal bands here) until the final explosive chorus finally wrapped things up for the night.
There’s never a lack of rap or rock concerts in New York City, but Cypress Hill’s annual Halloween shows have become one of the very best live music traditions we have. No matter what band is hot or who’s touring with who, you can always count on B-Real and Sen Dog to throw down on October 30th at the Best Buy Theater for 80 minutes of your favorite bass-blasting, weed-smoking rap songs. If you missed last night's show, that's okay because there's only 364 days until they're back next year!
