The delight in the book is the illustrations, which you can see samples of in the slide show. It tells the Beatles' story in a slightly screwball manner. The artwork is a family affair, done by Mauri, wife Tarja and daughter Jenna Kunnas. The book includes illustrations of the Woolton fete, Hamburg, Stu Sutcliffe, Brian Epstein, Pete Best and the “Flaming Pie” dream that gives the book its title.
Kunnas calls the book an “unauthorized biography” and says most of the events are “more or less true.” Anyone concerned about should know that noted Beatles author Mark Lewisohn is credited as an advisor on the book.
“Beatles With an 'A': Birth of a Band” is a lot more fun than serious, but that doesn't mean it's not a good pickup for a Beatles library.
