What’s not to like about the REC15A Wi-Fi Range Extender from Amped Wireless? Well, there’s one small detail for Apple users but it’s still a product worthy of recommendation.
For starters, this small yet powerful gadget is capable of extending the Wi-Fi range of a single or dual band wireless router up to 5,000 square feet. It’s also a breeze to set up, whether it’s a desktop, laptop or smart device, and plugs directly into any ordinary wall outlet. But what I like most about this compact device is its outstanding performance, particularly with streaming devices, such as Apple TV or Roku.
Utilizing high-powered amplifiers and a detachable, high gain dual band antenna, the REC15A High Power Wi-Fi Range Extender works by repeating, amplifying and redistributing the signal in an extended location, like the living room bedroom and even outdoors. The device works with any Wi-Fi standard 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and transmits via single band (2.4GHZ) or dual band (2.4GHz and 5.0GHz.
At just 3-inches tall by five-inches wide, the range extender was first introduced at the 2014 CES, when Amped Wireless described the REC15A as the “industry’s first high power, compact 802.11ac” and won a CES award for another one of its products - BTSA1 Long Range Bluetooth Speaker Adapter. The REC15A comes equipped with four amplifiers, including a high-power 2.4GHz amplifier and high-power 5.0GHz amplifier, in addition to a detachable, high gain dual band antenna. It also features a wired port for another network device such as a game console or media player and can connect with Apple’s AirPlay, AirPrint and Home Sharing.
Through a week’s worth of testing, with devices such as an iPhone 5, iPad Air, iMac, Roku Streaming Stick and Roku 3, Amped Wireless appears to have yet another winner in its line of high quality, award-winning, extended range wireless products. Although the REC15A comes with a user manual, Amped Wireless has an easy, step-by-step process via its web menu that launches quickly to guide you in connecting the device with a computer or mobile device. The web menu also offers additional settings, such as user access, wireless output power, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and a system clock that syncs with your computer. And if for some reason, an Amped Wireless device doesn’t live up to expectations, a “Range Increase Guarantee” is offered for most of their products.
Despite experiencing a noticeable improvement in extended coverage of my wireless network, particularly with streaming devices, I was quite disappointed to discover Amped Wireless’ Wi-Fi Analytics Tool, which assists in analyzing and optimizing your network for speed and coverage, is not available for Apple devices. Because of this, I was not able to fully utilize all of the features available on the REC15A and thus, unable to maximize its efficiency. In fact, the previous model REC10, priced $20 lower, yet with a wider range (6,500 square feet) for wireless standard 802.11b/g/n, is also incompatible with the Wi-Fi Analytics Tool.
While I would like to see Amped Wireless introduce a similar app for Apple users, I still recommend the REC15A High Power Wi-Fi Range Extender with that slight caveat. There may be a wide assortment of other options for range extenders, but only a few are compatible with the latest standard 802.11ac and even less can be plugged into the wall outlet. In conclusion, the REC15A is worthy of a five star rating from me, but I'd feel more justified with this assessment if I was able to review the Wi-Fi Analytics Tools.
