For 40 years iconic independent filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman and his Tromaverse has been bringing some of the most outrageous films to the masses including their flagship character The Toxic Avenger and Poultrygeist. Now they are returning to the world of their 1986 film Class of Nuke ‘Em High, but instead of a remake they are continuing the story with their latest release Return to Nuke ‘Em High. Most recently they have been touring the country showing the film including a stop here at the Texas Theater, but if for some insane reason you missed this awesome experience now is your chance to bring home the film on Blu-ray.

Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1 heads back to Tromaville High School where, unfortunately, the glee club has mutated into hideous Cretins. Now two innocent lovers/bloggers must fight not only mutants and monsters, but also the evil Tromorganic Foodstuffs Conglomerate, but will they be enough to save Tromaville High School and the world? Whether you have seen the original films or not, you can step into this one thanks to a recap featuring stock footage and a voice over by an awesome guest star you will be able to jump right in on the fun. This movie is vintage Troma with all the nudity, gore, grossness and fun you would expect from them. The story doesn’t veer too far from the original idea, but works to make it more current and uses every possible moment it can to mock and poke fun at the absurdities of today’s world and nothing is off limits. All of the classic gags are here as well as some cameos that some will recognize and others will just laugh regardless. Kaufman knows what he wants to make and never steers away from the goopy sexual ridiculous fun of it all and is exactly why it works. In someone else’s hands these kinds of films would crash and burn, but with Kaufman at the helm it brings the subtle charm to it that makes it feel like more than probably is. The performances are as cheesy and over the top as ever, which any true Troma fan would want it no other way. Some of the best moments are either so far out there they will either have you laughing or baffled in the confusing nature of it all as well as some great on screen character descriptions that had the audience laughing out loud. There are few filmmakers that can include running gags or plant easter eggs throughout the film in a variety of forms that will cause the audience to clap in excitement, but here Kaufman managed to pull it off numerous times. Be warned that there is a reason this film is named Volume 1 as it there is an obvious second part coming soon and the film does end on a cliffhanger.

This is pure Troma all the way and for those that do love them will no doubt have a great time with this one, for those that don’t you probably won’t watch it anyway. Hopefully Volume 2 will be getting the same tour treatment and release that it deserves. There are tons of Troma fans out there, so be sure to get out there and grab your copy to support the company so that we will continue to get more from them including their latest installment of the Toxic Avenger that was recently announced. In addition to the film this Blu-ray also includes commentaries, casting conundrum, Pre-production Hell, music video, special effects featurette and the trailer for Volume 2.
