There are only a handful of horror slashers that have stood the test of time and all of them have spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, but none have become as iconic as Freddy Krueger. Wes Craven’s dream warrior took the genre by storm when A Nightmare on Elm Street debuted in 1984 and has since spawned seven sequels and a remake, not to mention more marketing swag than you can shake your blades at. Now fans have a chance to look back at the series that change the face of horror with Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.

This documentary explores the origins of Freddy Krueger takes you behind the scenes of the most frightening and imaginative horror franchise in motion picture history. This insanely awesome documentary is divided into chapters focusing on each film and running around 3 to 4 hours not counting the numerous special features. While this may seem like a long time it is so well put together with interviews, behind the scenes stories, and clips from the films telling the tales from conception to release that it flies by. Each chapter is more interesting than the next giving some fresh insight to why certain things were done and the present feeling after all this time that will give you some new found respect for not only the classic great films, but also the ones that are not so great. This film is so well put together that it works great whether you are a fan of the series or not, but was clearly made with a true passion for this awesome series. It features interviews with numerous cast and crew sharing some great stories and thoughts on making the various entries into the franchise. In addition to the main film there are tons of special features including extended interviews, trailers, a first look at Heather Langenkamp’s “I Am Nancy”, and numerous featurettes.

Any fan of the franchise will love this documentary as it allows fans an inside look at the making and crazy ride it took to bring all these films to life. There is nothing more entertaining than hearing the cast and crew discuss the gay undertones of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge that fans have always poked fun at and this is just one of many great moments. If you were one of the millions that were sucked into the nightmare of Freddy Krueger then you will not want to miss out on this film.
