As two park groundskeepers of a local park, Mordecai and Rigby are the stars of the hit Cartoon Network animated series “Regular Show.” And this show is anything but. Now Cartoon Network has compiled another 16 episodes for the third “Regular Show” DVD dubbed the “Regular Show: Party Pack.”
Set for a March 5 release date with a street price of $19.82 (though online and store discounts may apply), “Party Pack” offers nearly three hours of slacker comedy where an typical work day task or avoidance of said task such as fooling around with a stick hockey table is quick to escalate into an absurd climax such as entering an underground stick hockey tournament to the death. No matter how formulaic the episode's situation gets, the casual delivery of the dialogue and clever writing gently ease you into accepting and enjoying these 11-minute episodes. It's even easy to accept the bizarre character designs of the main characters that include a human sized blue jay, a short raccoon, a grumpy gumball machine, an sage yeti, an olde-timey lollipop, and Muscle Man. Oddly enough, “Regular Show” does manage to sneak a lot of crap under the radar and even a few deaths of one-shot characters for an animated series that isn't on Adult Swim.
As with most Cartoon Network DVD compilations of hit shows, “Regular Show: Party Pack” is a pick and mix selection of great and forgettable episodes. Though the mix for “Party Pack” could have used some better planning. Two episodes in the DVD have similar plots where too much of a sugary foodstuff leads to potential disaster and the suggested solution is to add more sugar until implosion. It only works in one of the episodes, but this show of redundancy does show a moment of laziness in the writing. Additionally, the “Party Pack” package doesn't have any extra items to help throw a party unless you intend to use the DVD as a drink coaster or Frisbee. But that's more an issue with the title, which had the immense pressure of following the coolest “Regular Show” DVD title ever: “The Best DVD in the World *At This Moment in Time.”
