Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad (PC)

Tripwire Interactive now brings a nice predecessor to the acclaimed original, Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45. With cutting edge graphics, audio built on the Unreal Engine 3, inventive features and streamlined realism to deliver an unrivaled WWII experience.

The focus for Heroes of Stalingrad is based primarily around the battles for Stalingrad, featuring both German and Russian campaigns. These engagements are mainly from the July 1942 to February 1943 time period. By having this type of focal point it allows the player to experience an extremely ruthless part of human history, virtually of course and without losing any limbs.

Features:

  • For the first time ever gamers experience WWII from the Axis side in a German single player campaign.
  • Grow in rank, earn medals, improve your abilities, and become a hero.
  • Players with hero status inspire troops around them and cause fear in their enemies. Heroes have access to the best and rarest weapons and equipment, and will stand out visually from the rest of the soldiers.
  • Peek or blind fire over and around cover and more.
  • Command fire teams and suppress the enemy.
  • Send a fire team to flank them and hit them where it hurts.
  • True ballistics, bullet penetration, breathing, adjustable sights, free aim, weapon bracing, photo-real graphics.

Overall:

The single player missions are spent focusing your attention on directing your squad to achieve objectives that feel like they are right next to each other. After a few completed objectives it starts to get mind numbing. To give an example of what Red Orchestra gameplay is similar to; take Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and swap all of the modern technologies for World War II era technologies and you've hit the nail directly on the head.

Basically Tripwire was trying to capture the massive sales figures that the Call of Duty franchise obtained. They wanted to assure their players that they were listening however, it seems they just took the easiest route and sort of blew the game away. While it certainly is a new era they should not of tried to steer away from all the success they had with their original title. RO2 is worth 4/5 stars and let it be said that the action is completely in the multiplayer.
