Gravity - Midnight Sonata (2010, self-released)
Today I went on a trip. No, an adventure. I popped in the latest album from Cleveland instrumental progressive metal act Gravity. The album is Midnight Sonata. My adventure will be known as my Midnight Sonata. My iTunes play counter indicates I listened to this 12 times in a row today. That made for an amazing adventure. The adventure started with the long lost art of picking up an album because its cover art was intriguing. Picking it up because what was on the outside helped tell the story on the inside. In the case with Midnight Sonata the moon is setting and reflecting upon the water. The hands of time rest on the face of the moon ready to move forward. Despite everything standing still, the cover is as vibrant as the music inside. The water represents the timely riffing and fretboard fanatics of guitarist Eric Potapenko. The reflection of the moon on the water is Joe Capka’s keyboard cloaking the water in calming light. The thick darkness of the night sky is shrouded by Brian Craft and his bass playing. Heavy and pounding when needed and smooth and sufficient when the water calms. The hands of time represent Matt Kerschner and his drums that hold it all together and keep everything in motion. Tracks “The Darkest Hour” and “Chasing the Sun” have them at their best mixing intelligent riffing with beautiful leads on both guitar and keyboards.
Make no mistake; this is some high caliber musicianship Gravity has. They are bound and determined to take it to the moon, and beyond. If you are expecting anything less from these guys you are clearly mistaken. They have the chops to play with the big guns on the progressive metal stage, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, Opeth, and Symphony X. Progressive metal at its finest. This is definitely a book that you want to judge by its cover.

Yep Gravity is freaking amazing. You have to see their stage show, they are as good if not BETTER live than on record!
