Arrius the Black, Skeletal Champion

Arrius was probably a good guy to start, but he's working with a lot of handicaps. For one, he has "the Black" in his title, which makes him seem edgy and dangerous. For another, being called skeletal pretty much gives away that he's a skeleton. If Arrius bothered to keep his helmet down, you wouldn't necessarily know this -- but since it's right there in his title he may as well let it all hang out, right? And finally he's a champion. Is he a champion, as in like the best of the skeletons? Or is he someone's formal representative in a conflict? It's hard to tell, but poor Arrius has a lot of weight on his bony shoulders.

By far one of my favorite incarnations of the skeleton warrior was Dekkion, who debuted in the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon:

Dekkion explains that he was once a Celestial Knight, a band of mystical warriors who roamed the skies on war-birds and fought evil. He says he is the remaining knight and that an evil wizard turned him into a skeleton. He wants the heroes to retrieve the Circle of Power for him so that he can break the spell and that he cannot enter the tower himself, as the curse forbids it. The heroes agree to help as the tower is the same one mentioned by Dungeon Master.

And Dekkion was in turn inspired by the skeleton warrior monster that appeared in the original Fiend Folio:

Skeleton warriors are created from great warriors by powerful necromancy. Unlike their lesser kin, skeleton warriors retain all of their fighting skill and are highly resistant to magic. Skeleton warriors are difficult to command, and as such are rarely found in groups greater than two or three.

Bob Ridolfi has created a pretty awesome sculpt that just screams bad guy, or perhaps in Arrius' (and Dekkion's) case, severely misunderstood guy. You can purchase this miniature at Amazon.
