Griffons are curious beasts in Dungeons & Dragons -- due to their wings they can sometimes be difficult to sculpt. Some sculptors have the wings folded back, others with the griffon wheeling around in mid-flight, and still others with the wings straight up -- all to accommodate the challenge of what would normally be a massive wingspan. Well sculptor Sandra Garrity isn't having any of that. This griffon rears up in all its glory, wings majestically spread out to make the miniature a huge (at least 11 HD in 3.5) griffon. Given its awesome size one has to wonder why it's considered a dwarf.

This griffon is typical of its kind, which is to say it has eagle wings, an eagle head, eagle forelimbs, and the body, tail, and back legs of a lion. Griffons are heraldic beasts and it shows -- they combined the majesty of the eagle with the authority of the lion. It's entirely possible that the concept of a griffon came from the bones of a protoceratops found in gold mines in the Altai mountains of Scythia, in present day southeastern Kazakhstan, or in Mongolia.

On the one hand it might mean that this griffons get even larger than this. On the other, it's hard to imagine that dwarves somehow "own" these beasts. Do they ride them? Keep them as pets? Who knows. Ignore the title and you've got a fabulous sculpt of a huge griffon.
