Realigned - OLTL in review, November 14 - 18

Best Scene This Week:

"John!  Wait!"  Natalie was looking like a princess in her non-traditional wedding dress as she stopped John from getting on his plane just in time.  Of course she had to explain the entire story to John, who hadn't managed to put two and two together because he had been too distracted by his love for Natalie and his sorrow at Liam not being his son.  Both John and Natalie were shocked and amazed as the story fell into place, and magic crossed their faces when she said, "Liam is your son."

Honorable mention:  Cord and Tina getting married … again.

Eye Roll of the Week:

Shaun mentioning "Destiny's child."  Did they really mean to put that in the script?

Character of the Week:

Brody was the villain this week when it was revealed that he had known for some time that Liam was not his son and it started to make sense why he had threatened Victor.  After he kidnapped Liam, even the police assumed he had set The Sun on fire to keep Vimal and Rama quiet.

However, it was easy to identify with Brody as the family he was trying to build with Natalie fell apart in the middle of his wedding.  The scene was eerily similar to the last time Brody tried to get married and the wedding was halted because of DNA results.  That time, he lost Jessica and Ryder.  This time, he was losing Natalie and Liam.

Even when Brody walked out of the church and went back to Llanfair to explain his position to Liam (and also thanks to some well-positioned reminiscing by Jessica) it was easy to remember that Brody suffered from post-traumatic stress, that this was the second time this had happened to him, and that this was actually the third time he had tried to be a father to someone and had it taken away from him.

Brody wasn't simply a "bad guy."  He was tragic and riveting.

Quote(s) of the Week:

"She runs like a girl." - Rex, as Natalie rushed through the airport to find John

"Put away stuff that could break.  She likes to throw things." - Shane, advising Clint on what to do if Natalie comes back upset

Questions This Week:

Show of hands?  How many people would leave their (assumed to be shared) baby at home while they got married?

How much credit card debt is Cutter wracking up?

Why didn't anyone question where Brody was going when he left the wedding?

No marriage license?  Since when did that stop a change of wedding participants in soap operas?

Will John ever get his luggage back?

Vimal gets knocked out and grabs a vacuum cleaner?  What dedication!

Why doesn't Rex just ask to borrow the family jet if he wants to get to Rio faster?

Fail of the Week:

The opening scenes of the week could not have been soapier if they were shoved in our mouths after a bad word.  People were stating their actions aloud and everything centered on true identities and baby-daddies. And how perfect was it that one DNA test was exposed at Jessica and Natalie's double wedding and another was exposed during Natalie's re-do wedding?

However, the scenes that followed the exposing of the truth - Natalie's anger, Brody's confession, and the facial expressions of the people in the congregation as they personally reacted to the discussion - were delicious soap.

Success of the Week:

Tuesday's episode was brilliant.  Viki calling Dorian for yet another favor involving someone Dorian didn't get along with underscored Viki and Dorian's often strenuous and hateful but ultimate friendship.  (Wouldn't you have liked to hear what Dorian had to say about the goings-on in Llanview?)  Once again, Dorian's political influence and connections came through in the nick of time.  (That alone was worth the minister refusing to marry Tina and Cord without a license.)

Nigel's suspicion of Brody was exactly as it should have been.  Clint and Nigel may not patter around in the Buchanan Mansion these days but Nigel is not shirking his duty to serve the Buchanan family -- and he's also no fool.  Nigel handled the situation just as he should have, pulling out his phone to consult with Natalie about the baby when he did not like Brody's answers.

Jessica and Ford's love scene was pure in that they stopped to question their motives and intentions before they jumped in bed together.  It was refreshing to be treated to a bit of genuine "love in the afternoon."

Natalie and John realizing the truth and excitedly leaving the airport just to go see Liam was sweet and sincere, and just how parents should have reacted in that situation.

And finally, Roxy's prayer was a moment of beauty -- happy and hopeful for Natalie, but still wishing that Rex could find his happiness too.

Also, kudos to the people playing the airline employees!  They were excellent!
