Ray LaMontagne sounds a little like an amalgamation of Bob Seger and Van Morrison on his new single, “Supernova,” which was released today. He wraps his passionate vocal cords around an insistent acoustic guitar rhythm that is simply irresistible.
For those of you that aren’t science geeks, a supernova is a stellar explosion so luminous it oftentimes outshines the entire galaxy -- for about a space minute. However, it eventually fades from view after some weeks or months.
The song’s lyric is not anything so sci-fi that you would imagine Captain Kirk reciting it during an old Star Trek episode. Instead, LaMontagne calls his romantic muse a “blazing star,” while he repeats, “I want you to be my girl.” Finding that right girl can bring light into a man’s dark world, and in this case, LaMontagne has found just such a bright hope.
LaMontagne is one of those rare talents that really ought to be a star, such as the variety he sings about during his song. Let’s hope this new single takes him there.
