Few filmmakers exceed the impact of Steven Spielberg, who is particularly noteworthy for his ability to work in multiple film genres. Yesterday, this column reviewed “E.T.,” one of the most beloved family films of all time. With a much more adventurous narrative, Spielberg’s 1981 “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” demonstrates his enormous ability to capture the deliver an action-packed movie going experience.
Set in the 1930s,“Raiders of the Lost Ark” is the first of the “Indiana Jones” films and was inspired by the “B” movies Spielberg and producer George Lucas enjoyed as children. In it, the United States Army beseeches Dr. Indiana Jones (played by Harrison Ford), an adventure-seeking research archaeologist, to find the ark of the convent, which allegedly contains the tablets with the 10 commandments that Moses got from God. They want “Indy” to secure the ark before the Nazis, who think it will make their army invincible, locate it. Helping them is Indy’s nemesis; Belloq (played by Paul Freeman). On the other hand, our hero is being assisted by his old flame, Marion (played by Karen Allen).
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” has many memorable action sequences. An example is the famous opening scene where Dr. Jones attempts to steal a small gold statue from a Peruvian cave. He is almost killed as he tries to escape. Another fun scene shows several people attacking Marion in the bar she works in. There is an exciting fight when Indy saves her. These and other scenes keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
The cast of this movie is amazing. Harrison Ford makes Indiana Jones one of the great movie action heroes of all-time. He is very smart and has several cool weapons, such as a whip and a handgun. Paul Freeman is equally good as the villain, who is as smart as Indy. Karen Allen is also strong as the defiant Marion, who can hold her own at the bar.
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” is one of the best action films of all-time.
