The flute used to be one of the staple instruments in jazz and popular music. There is one artist that is hopefully bringing the flute back in a big way. Her name is Ragan Whiteside and she is a flutist, vocalist, songwriter and arranger. Her latest album is titled Quantum Drive and it is a 12 song disc that Ragan Whiteside plays flute and sings. Her flute playing has been described as silky and sweet by one of her contemporaries Bob Baldwin. You can definitely hear that silky and sweet sound on this project. She does a very nice job on vocals as well.

Some of the notable songs on the disc are: Remind Me originally done by Patrice Rushen who by the way, is featured on keyboards on this song. Another one is Valentin Dream which features Bob Baldwin on piano and keyboards. Smokey Room features Frank McComb and Bob Baldwin. On the song Soul Biscuit , Ms. Whiteside plays flute and sings. On the title track Quantum Drive she also does vocals and plays flute. Really all of the songs are very good and the album is a keeper. We don't hear enough of the flute these days.

This is the third studio album from Ragan Whiteside and hopefully there will be many more. It is great to see the flute blended with vocals and other instruments as it has been done before. Ms. Whiteside has played with the likes of Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright and Marion Meadows to name a few. I've been a long time fan of Hubert Laws and Bobbi Humphrey who are two prolific flute players. I can also say that I am a fan of Ragan Whiteside.
