Puddle of Mudd - what happened in Dallas

I usually try to follow the policy that I grew up with . . . . if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. But concerning last night, I have to say, what the hell happened here? I have been to hundreds, if not thousands, of rock concerts, but am having difficulty trying to understand, rationalize or something, what happened at the Puddle of Mudd concert at Trees on April 17. I have never seen anything like it in my entire life.

First of all, there was a long wait for Puddle of Mudd to take the stage. When the curtains finally opened, Wes Scantlin, frontman of the band, staggered out while the rest of the band came out, not really making any eye contact with the already unruly crowd.

The first song of the night was "Control", which obviously Scantlin had none of. He was lip-sinching the entire song, not even getting that right. He was singing the right lines at the wrong time, and when the song was over, he was soundlessly still singing. The night went downhill from there. When they did turn his mic on, it was even worse, as Scantlin repeatedly cursed at the crowd. Several times throughout the night as Scantlin was singing (if you could actually call it that), he entangled himself in the microphone cords and had to be rescued. At one point he threw his guitar down, which he was not ever really playing anyway. His erratic behavior continually escalated until he threw the microphone into the crowd. Next someone threw a drink on Scantlin, in return he tossed a bottle of water out, then tossed drink after drink at the crowd. In response, many people began throwing their drinks on stage. It was utter chaos, but the show went on. Scantlin contiued to curse at the crowd throughout the night. At one point, he unsuccessfully tried to pull a guy on stage to fight. The crowd was enraged, screaming obscenities back at Scantlin.

Wes Scantlin finally left the stage, only to return minutes later, seeming to have regained some composure. But, the crowd was still angry and did not let up, immediately throwing beers and drinks all over him, and the ruckus was on again.

The last song of the night was "She Hates Me" - the perfect ending for a night gone bad! For the complete set list from Trees, see my slideshow.

No matter how this show went, I am still a fan of Puddle of Mudd. But, like I said before - what happened? Puddle of Mudd has sold over seven million albums, and have had several #1 singles. In 2002, at the Billboard Music Awards the band won both Modern Rock Artist of the Year and Rock Artist of the Year. Some of Puddle of Mudd's top hits are "Away From Me", "Psycho", "She Hates Me", "Control", "Famous", "You Don't Know", and "Drift and Die". Even though I rated this concert a one star show, would I pay to go see Puddle of Mudd play again? Yes. Regardless of Scantlin's behavior at Trees, I still love this band!
