Dark Souls: a series that takes pride in letting players know they will die. It's a divisive series not because of it being good or bad, but due to its difficulty. Impossible? No. Early Nintendo games like Battletoads are more frustratingly hard. What Dark Souls offers is a rewarding challenge and will not hold anyone's hand. Foreboding yes, but this writer is up for the challenge having dabbled in the previous two games. Dark Souls 2 was going to be the one defeated.

Turns out that purchase was one of the best of the year so far. Unlike the other games there was something about DS2 that clicked right away. Maybe it was discovering things for the first time along with everyone else since it launched. Like a MMO, the community for the series is simply astounding. There’s nothing quite like it.

Dark Souls 2 isn’t vastly different from the previous titles, but the environments, story, gameplay, and everything else are tweaked to a fine-toothed comb. Those little changers help balance the game out in both good and bad ways. On the good side, it’s easier than ever for someone to jump in thanks to those tweaks. On the bad side, well, it’s still hard as hell. Still, the addictive nature and community-based gameplay make this title unique beyond anything else that everyone needs to try besides it just naturally being a fantastic game.

Now again, despite sinking hours into this game, this guy never truly felt amazing. There are others out there who dedicate themselves to the series and know the ins and outs of the mechanics. That said these are some easy, simple tips to get newbies out the dark. Good luck and happy deaths.

  • Talk to everyone as they share valuable info and or grant gifts
  • Be careful and cautious, a slow adventurer is an alive adventurer
  • Do not waste human effigies, use them right before a boss if needed
  • Don’t be afraid to call on the aid of others via summon signs
  • Stick with one set of armor and a few weapons to level them up
  • Spend souls wisely and on a regular basis
  • Multiclass, focus on one skill, but have backups

Dark Souls 2 was released on March 11, 2014 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. To better understand Dark Souls 2, don’t forget to watch the Qwiktro review via ReActionExaminer.
