The two major drawbacks of the 5175 lay with the overlooked yet highly desired implementation of Bluetooth technology and; for some, the lack of Mac compatibility when it comes to updating the device. And while the Bluetooth issue seems a more slack worthy concession, in that most Bluetooth devices that could be paired with the unit may already offer their own GPS solutions, Magellan may have severely capped an enormous economic pipeline with Mac users regarding incompatibility, especially with the added draw of lifetime map updates adding insult to injury.
Users can update the unit via its WiFi connection; so it’s not a total wash, but my experiences with the 5175’s WiFi speed thus far have been fair at best. And while at the time of this review no immediate plans have been uttered to resolve this issue, Magellan may yet seek to offer eager Mac users a more stable solution, given the scope and sizeable features the 5175 offers.
First and foremost though the 5175 is; after all, a GPS and as such delivers impeccable performance and reliable service. Whether taking on the vast labyrinth of Houston streets or simply finding your way to the best “little known gems” in town, the 5175 guides you through with amazing clarity and ease of use. And with all of downtown Houston’s one-way streets and confusing construction – the true tests of any superior unit – the 5175 definitely stands up to any and all abundant; and annoying, “recalculating” concerns.
Other notable features include an incredibly slim but solid feel, a Mini-SD card slot – though why they didn’t just go with a standard SD card slot is confusing – a QWERTY keyboard (standard keyboard like the one in front of your computer) feature, and probably one of the best features offered… the device has the capabilities of speaking the street names to you. So you never have to take your eyes off the road in fear of missing your exit.
The WiFi feature is also nice for those who don’t have Smartphones; but again as in stated above, the web browser is fairly slow and intermittently reliable. So though somewhat encumbered by a few minor cons, the Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM persistently leads on taking both drivers and data-heads to the next level of GPS convenience.
