The run-up to Valentine’s Day typically entails chocolate overload, so this Examiner was thrilled when gluten-free titan Kinnikinnick Foods announced the follow-up to their popular seasonal Pumpkin Spice donut would be a Cinnamon-Apple flavor – and even more delighted to receive some complimentary samples from the company last week.
Happily, these petite, super-moist donuts made with apple puree and cinnamon didn’t disappoint. Straight off, something notable about this product was the tantalizing smell. Upon thawing, the donuts have an oily, cake-like aroma identical to that of their conventional counterparts; the scent of cinnamon reaches your nose before you even take your first bite. Coated with cinnamon glaze and topped with ribbons of pink cinnamon icing, they are decidedly sweet and spicy – mildly reminiscent of an apple fritter with a hint of cinnamon hearts.
Although the texture is light, they still hold together beautifully when dipped in coffee (or, as we discovered in a fit of decadence, even apple butter. Delicious!). Buoyed by this most recent taste experience, we are looking forward to trying more varieties of Kinnikinnick donuts in the months ahead.
The Cinnamon-Apple flavor is a limited-time offering, available only until the end of February, and can be ordered exclusively online through the company’s website. However, Kinnikinnick’s other donut varieties – Cinnamon Sugar, Vanilla Glazed, Maple Glazed and Chocolate Dipped – are available locally at Sprouts Farmers Market, Whole Foods Market, the Gluten Free Country Store, Fry’s and other major retailers.
Like all of their donuts, the Cinnamon-Apple variety is gluten, nut, dairy and soy free, and the company employs dedicated gluten-free facilities and equipment in their manufacturing process.
Until February 8, if you visit their blog, you can enter the Valentines Box o’ Chocolate contest, for a chance to win a box full of all of the brand’s products that contain chocolate, PLUS the tasty seasonal Cinnamon-Apple and Pumpkin Spice donuts. Good luck!
