Health is Wealth sent me samples of their new gluten-free sprouted grains burgers to try called Sprout Burger. They come in three flavors: original, chipotle bean and mushroom and onion and they are made with sprouted gluten-free grains and non-gmo soy.
I eat meat and I have rarely found a veggie burger that doesn't taste like filler, so I was intrigued that these burgers use sprouted gluten-free grains that contain fiber and protein and I was really interested to give them a try. I tried the original and chipotle bean burgers (mushrooms and I don't get along). I heated my burger in the toaster oven, as it was the most convenient method for me, but you can microwave them, or cook them in a pan on the stove.
I topped my burger with a little hummus and I found that I didn't miss bread or a bun. The burger held up and it didn't crumble. The burger was also quite filling. There wasn't really an aftertaste to them and I actually felt like I had consumed a real burger and not a vegan burger.
So here is what I like about the burgers:
- They use non-gmo soy
- The use fiberful, sprouted gluten-free grains: quinoa, amaranth and millet
- They are low in fat, but high in fiber(oat fiber) and protein
- They are very filling by themselves, so no bun/bread is needed
- I like the flavor and the heartiness of the burger, but would I would like to taste more spices and maybe a little heat
- They are indistinguishable as a gluten-free/vegan burger; rather they just taste like a vegan burger.
So here is what I don't like about the burgers:
- Soy is the main ingredients and I would like to have all of the burgers contain beans (original and mushroom and onion have no beans) because I feel it adds a really good flavor and texture to the mix.
- I don't care for the texture as there is a slight crunch to them.
Since I eat meat, I asked a friend of mine who is a vegan to try them out and here are her thoughts. "I enjoyed the sprouted burger. It had a rich earthy flavor. It seemed like a decadent treat yet the ingredients are so healthy! I don't often eat meat substitutes but I can see this one becoming a staple. It would make a delicious quick fix!"
I like that Health is Wealth is adding gluten-free products to their line since they mainly produce foods that are vegan/vegetarian. They are now making gluten free: mozzarella sticks, chicken nuggets, chicken free nuggets, and sprout burgers. The mozzarella sticks and the nuggets are really tasty and I have purchased them more than once.
If you don't eat meat and you are looking for a healthful alternative then give the sprout burgers a try. As you can see from this review my vegan friend really liked them and she does not need to eat gluten free.
