Pro Wrestling Review of Super Bowl XVLI : The Wrestlemania of Football

Last night the world gathered for one of the biggest Sports events of the year:  Super Bowl XLV. In Pro Wrestling ciricles, annual WWE Wrestlemania show is called the 'Super Bowl of Wrestling', so why not review last night's sports television spectacular as if it were a Pro Wrestling extravaganza like Wrestlemania?

  • Giants receiver Mario Manningham's graceful catch where fended off double coverage to put his team in prime yards to win the game, was like a WWE superstar setting up for their finishing move. The Undertaker always hits the Choke Slam before he hits the Tombstone Piledriver, for the Giants this Manningham catch was their Choke Slam on the Patriots.
  • In WWE, we always see a valiant hero being plagued by an injury going into a big match. Giants linebacker Rob Gronkowski faced the same challenge with a high ankle sprain coming into the biggest game of his career last night in Indianoplis. Yet when this leg injury slowed him down considerably, it allowed him to be perfect position to shock Patriots quaterback Tom Brady and pick off a second half pass. This was like seeing the 450lb Big Show hit a flying elbow off a top rope, it's rare to see a heavyweight linebacker make such a pickoff grab like that.

  • Patriot head coach Bill Billichek made a call in the final minute of the game to allow the Giants to score, giving Brady a minute to make it happen. It's a 'high risk manuever' similar to Rey Mysterio's calculate top rope moves, when you really want to win with little to work with, you put it all out there. Billichek did this last night, but instead of the Pats leaping off the ropes and pinning the Giants, they ate the canvas. The Giants held the Patriots off, winning the Super Bowl 21 to 17.
  • The agine Superstar. We have seen some successful Pro Wrestling icons like the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels sustain their starpower going into their 40's, while others are simply too old and beaten by their years in the ring to thrill like they once did. Unfortunately, pop singer Madonna who dominated the entertainment world in the 80's and 90's  may have seen her starpower fade last night. Madge had a lavish production during her Super Bowl halftime show, but the medley performance reminded me of a 2011/12  Hulk Hogan match. Hogan who will be remebered as a legend, now performs with many physical limitations and relies on younger stars to carry his liabilities in his most recent matches with TNA Wrestling. The Hulkster has also been reduced to working gimmicks like weapons into his matchees to hide his weakneses. Madonna's Halftime show relied on flurry dancers, modern day pop stars, and stage effects. The young talents on the halftime show like Cee Lo Green, M.I.A, Nicki Minaj, and LMFAO carred Madonna from one routine to another. She still showed flair and passion, but the swagger of the 'Material Girl' was just not there.
