'Pretty Little Liars' 'Will the Circle be Unbroken?' review: Mona’s offer

On “Pretty Little Liars” “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” which aired on March 5, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) made some discoveries and received an interesting proposition from Mona (Janel Parrish).

Spencer’s stay in Radley is, by far, the most intriguing storyline of the night. But of course there were a few other distractions in Rosewood, if only because the other three friends weren’t able to visit Spencer, who they now consider the “weak link.”

Aria (Lucy Hale) reached out to her dad, attempting to get Ezra (Ian Harding) a job. Emily (Shay Mitchell) randomly met Olympian swimmer Missy Franklin when she wasn’t trying to get info out of Dr. Sullivan.

Hanna (Ashley Benson) was the only one who seems to be in a real mess of her own making. Wilden (Bryce Johnson) is most definitely alive, and he’s demanding that Hanna, or Ashley (Laura Leighton), give him his car back. But why is Wilden so worried about his car? Is there something in it that he doesn’t want someone to discover? That’s one big question left unanswered on “Pretty Little Liars” “Will the Circle be Unbroken?”

Spencer isn’t crazy, to put it mildly. She’s just been pushed to the edge, and she needed a break from herself and from life. But Mona isn’t about to give her the break she needs. Rather, she taunts her and make one big admission: “I have the answers Spencer. I have the answers to questions you haven’t even thought of."

So what does Mona want on “PLL”? She wants Spencer, of all people, to join the A team. “Look at all that’s happened since you turned me down on our little drive up the mountain,” Mona says. “All the pain and disappointment and loss because you’re stubborn. But I believe in second chances. I’m a generous person.”

But it begs the question, why? Why Spencer and not Hanna, Emily, or Aria? Is it because of Toby (who Dr. Sullivan implied might still be alive)? Or does Mona think that Spencer has a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that she so desperately needs?

Whatever Mona’s motivations on “Pretty Little Liars,” she’s clearly determined to break Spencer as much as possible, and she may have gotten her wish. Even as Spencer befriends the nurse E. Lamb in order to get information out of him about Toby’s visits to Radley, she’s realizing she’s no longer the same person.

She also no longer thinks her friends should trust her. Does this mean she’s considering going to the dark side? Or is she realizing that pretending to be on the A team will get her the answers she wants?

Or, more likely, she’s realizing that everything that’s gone on with Mona and Toby has simply changed her. She can’t look at the world the same way again. She feels broken, and she doesn’t think she’ll ever feel whole again.

But while Spencer has clearly and definitively hit rock bottom, other clues are afoot as well. Mona has most of Ali’s old diaries -- and no, she wasn’t pregnant -- but not all of them. And Spencer remembers Ali mentioning the diaries; “I’m writing them for you,” Ali says. “They’re beyond scandalous. You’re going to need them if you’re going to carry on after I’m gone.”

But “carry on” what? Is the A team somehow using the diaries as a guide? There’s still so many questions and not enough answers, and there’s only two episodes left in "Pretty Little Liars" season three.
