‘Pretty Little Liars’ ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’ Review: What happened to Toby?

Pretty Little Liars” “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” -- which aired Feb. 27 on ABC Family -- centered around two big events: what happened to both Wilden (Bryce Johnson) and Toby (Keegan Allen).

Both of their fates are far from certain on “PLL,” despite Mona (Janel Parrish) declaring Toby dead when Spencer (Troian Bellisario) approached a body at a campsite in the middle of nowhere. While promos leading up to the episode featured someone’s death, the circumstances around Spencer’s discovery are just a tad suspicious.

As for Hanna (Ashley Benson), she’s the queen of making stupid mistakes, ones that even Aria (Lucy Hale) can’t put a stop to. At this point, after being taunted by A for so long, why would Hanna even encourage her mother (Laura Leighton) to keep Wilden’s disappearance a secret? Sure, Ashley Marin hit Wilden with her car and ran, but she did return to the scene of the crime, and she could have easily reported what happened. And Wilden was clearly threatening her, and her daughter, on the video that Hanna discovers.

Still, telling secrets to the police isn’t how the game is played on “Pretty Little Liars.” Rather, Hanna, afraid that either Wilden or A is messing with her, pushes Wilden’s car into the lake. But, really, that car is going to be found, and chances are, something in that car will make the cops suspect the Marin ladies.

More interestingly on “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” is Emily’s (Shay Mitchell) stubborn belief that Toby couldn’t be a part of the A team. She’s very much in denial, and so it’s only natural that she wants to find Toby and get the truth straight from him. But there’s a slight problem with that. Toby may plan to meet her, but he doesn’t make it to the meeting. After all, he shows up "dead" in the woods.

But is it really him? Spencer didn’t get a chance to take off the bike helmet before she started chasing Mona, and even the tattoo on his hip, that read “901 free at least,” doesn’t guarantee it's really Toby. He might just be trying to escape Rosewood and make everyone think he’s dead.

So that’s the big question of the “Pretty Little Liars” night, but there’s plenty of other questions, too -- and no answers. Who did Emily see walking into the warehouse? She was most definitely blonde and wearing the infamous “PLL” red coat; could it be Cece (Vanessa Ray), Ali’s twin, or even Ali herself? And then there’s Toby’s co-worker. He may tease Emily about looking for both Toby and the blonde girl, but he clearly knows something, because he knows Emily’s name.

As for Wilden, is he alive? And if he is, why hasn’t he returned to work or gone after Ashley and Hanna again? Chances are Wilden is dead, and somehow the A team is messing with Hanna all over again.

Through all this, Aria is still trying to decide what to do about Ezra (Ian Harding) and his new family. But really, that’s not nearly as exciting as the rest of the drama, especially Spencer’s epic meltdown. She’s found wandering around the woods, deemed a Jane Doe, and sent to Radley for psychiatric evaluation. She can’t fall any farther than that, but perhaps this is just what she needs to discover the truth. She’ll discover things about Mona while in the loony bin, but will it be enough to restore her sanity?

“Pretty Little Liars” airs on ABC Family Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST.
