"Pretty Little Liars" fans have known that Toby (Keegan Allen) is on the A team ever since the end of the summer season, but it's winter now, and finally time for his real identity to come to light to at least one person in Rosewood. But that's not the only thing happening on the Jan. 22 episode "Misery Loves Company."
Hanna (Ashley Benson) is once again taunted by A, who threatens, "Next time you'll be left faceless," after he/she leads her to a fake interview downtown. That's only to be expected though after Hanna told Mona (Janel Parrish) to her face that she doesn't want to have anything to do with her again.
Meredith (Amanda Schull) also finally loses all her marbles on "PLL" as she creepily locks Aria (Lucy Hale) in her room, and it's revealed that she's -- no surprise -- drugging Aria with her "medicinal" tea. Meredith believes Byron (Chad Lowe) killed Ali, and she'll do anything to protect her lover. He doesn't need protection apparently though, because he didn't do anything -- and Aria believes him.
While all of this was creepy on "Pretty Little Liars" "Misery Loves Company," something else more sinister is afoot, maybe. After all, in a rare reveal for the ABC Family show, Toby and Mona are on-screen talking about their latest plot. Toby doesn't think they're ready, but neither he nor Mona are calling the shots. Mona says, "Fear cuts deeper than a sword. They need to understand that she's in charge."
But who is that "she"? And what is their plot exactly?
The next night is when this supposed "plot" is supposed to go down, and it's also the night of Toby and Spencer's (Troian Bellisario) anniversary. When she tries surprising him, she finds something disturbing: his Radley ID badge. She knows he was visiting Mona, and now she knows that he's on the A team after she catches him red-handed in the Hastings house looking for a key that A dropped while attacking Hanna.
But is Toby's reveal to Spencer what Mona and Toby were really plotting? Is Mona still trying to get Spencer on the A team? That seems like a weak theory though, at least so far on the show.
Or maybe the plot was actually more about Meredith. Could she be the “she” Mona referred to? It seems unlikely. While Meredith was no friend of Ali when she was alive, she just comes off as yet another crazy Rosewood girl. But she's crazy about Byron and keeping his "secret." She has no reason to hate Aria's friends.
While "PLL" "Misery Loves Company" was full of moments that made viewers jump -- in part because it was a dark and stormy night -- it felt lacking. If Toby and Mona are going to assert that their latest plot needs to happen the next night, then it should be a bit more clear what that plot is exactly. Or maybe their plot was just put into motion, and it's going to get a whole lot dangerous for the Rosewood friends soon.
"Pretty Little Liars" airs on ABC Family Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST.
