The intensity of “Grave New World” stayed true to the series’ previous Halloween episodes, which are always huge affairs, including performances from Adam Lambert in season three. This year’s Halloween celebration followed the Liars—Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario)—to a World War I-themed party in the neighboring town of Ravenswood. The Liars never disappoint in Halloween costumes, and this year was no different as they donned outfits inspired by “Downtown Abbey”.
“Grave New World” follows the summer finale of “Pretty Little Liars” in which it was revealed that Ezra (Ian Harding)—longtime love interest of Aria and the Liars’ former English teacher—could be the mysterious and seemingly omnipotent “A”. However, “Pretty Little Liars” is known for its shocking reveals that turn out to be not always what they seem; for example, both Mona and Toby previously have been falsely revealed as “A”. We will have to wait and see whether Ezra truly is “A.”
“Grave New World” followed more closely to the horror genre than previous Halloween episodes of “Pretty Little Liars”, including a “haunted” house, secret passageways, and mysterious objects going bump in the night. And of course, let us not forget the lurking presence of the ever creepy seer, Ms. Grunwald. Like the Queen of Hearts from last season’s Halloween, the award for most frightening costume goes to Ezra and to a new character, Luke, both donned in a WWI soldier’s uniform, complete with gas mask; both suggested to be “A”.
Despite the continuing questions of Ezra’s potential identity as “A”, last night’s episode is shocking for the biggest reveal of all: Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) is alive. The series has been building up to this bomb but has always left some mystery as to whether it could truly be. And now, we know without a doubt that Ali has been alive more than simply in the flashbacks of her friends. Perhaps (and hopefully) her struggles will transfer her from the girl we love to hate to one who we sympathize with and can understand.
Only time will tell whether Ezra is “A” and what happened to Ali because “Grave New World” is the only new episode of “Pretty Little Liars” until the fourth season officially returns on Tuesday, January 7. Until then, we can turn our focus to “Ravenswood”, a spinoff of “Pretty Little Liars which aired immediately following “Grave New World” and follows in part the character of Caleb Rivers (Tyler Blackburn).
