Just in case the “Pretty Little Liars” gals haven’t had enough high school dances and socials to attend this year, they’ve got a hoe down on “Bring Down the Hoe,” the penultimate episode of the season, which aired August 20.
Naturally, all the “PLL” events are leading up to that dance. Emily (Shay Mitchell) ignores texts from Paige (Lindsay Shaw) about going together. Ezra (Ian Harding) fails to talk to Aria (Troian Bellasario) about Malcolm, but gets to meet Jake instead. Spencer (Troian Bellasario), unable to continue to lead her double life, tells her friends that Toby’s (Keegan Allen) mom might have been murdered. But most interesting, and random, of all? Hanna (Ashley Benson) gets a wad of cash with a note that says, “Maybe this can help your mother,” and notices some stranger staring at her in the school hallway.
Those four storylines aren’t the only happenings on “Bring Down the Hoe.” There were some out-of-the-blue flashbacks, like Emily remembering Ali (Sasha Pieterse) painting her nails blue and Ali telling her of all the times she’s had to help girls break up with their boyfriends. In fact, one of those boys was a guy who pulled a gun on her. This reveal prompts the girls to wonder: what if Cece dated both Jason and Wilden? The idea isn’t so far-fetched.
Then there’s Toby on “Pretty Little Liars,” who is increasingly being drawn under A’s spell again to everyone -- especially Spencer’s -- dismay. But wouldn’t any of the girls be intrigued by gifts from A? Toby receives a CD of his mother singing, and then an address to where Dr. Palmer’s old car is. But like anything with A, it’s all a set up. Just as Toby starts breaking into the car, a cop pulls up. Luckily for him, Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and him run into the woods just in time, at least for now.
And then, in one of the most heart pounding moments of all, the “PLL” girls check out the DiLaurentis crawl space which Emily discovered last week. They may not find anything there, but someone stabbing knitting needles through the floorboard holes and nearly taking Aria’s eye out isn’t the best way to be spending an afternoon.
So who stabbed the needles through the holes? And who is red coat? All signs continue to point to Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray), but she’s clearly not working alone, despite losing both Mona and Toby as allies. “Where are you?” Cece says into her cell to someone -- maybe Wren? “I’m not waiting here forever, and I’m sure as hell not going back to Rosewood.” A red coat is tossed over a chair, but does that mean it’s Cece’s? Could it be that there is more than one red coat?
Well, most definitely, because that’s exactly what Spencer and Emily find in the back of the hay truck. How that “red coat” crawled through the hay on the other hand? That’s questionable. But either way, the clues are slowly but surely stacking up. And Cece does go back to Rosewood at some point, because she’s listening outside Ezra’s door when he talks to Aria.
Let’s also not forget the mysterious stranger in Hanna’s life, a guy named Travis. It turns out he could actually be the key to saving Hanna’s mom. He lived near where Wilden got shot, and he saw Ashley drive away long before the shots rang out. Fortunately for Hanna, she even convinces him to go to the cops.
“Pretty Little Liars” “Bring Down the Hoe” brought more clues, but hardly any answers. Hopefully Marlene King and the writers are just saving that for the big reveal that’s supposedly happening in next week’s summer season finale.
