I am always looking for something new and a new author to read so I jumped at a chance to try a short story by a new author that I had heard of but never read: R. M. Prioleau. This short story, “Present company,” was available on NetGalley so I decided to go ahead and give it a shot and see if it would entice me to try more of the author’s works.
“Present company” is a very short story that takes place before the author’s “The necromancer’s apprentice” novella. A woman is looking for a new start to life and an escape from her past when she comes across a necromancer. Taking her in, the necromancer puts his plans into play but this change for the woman may not end up being a good thing in the end.
This story is only a couple pages long and is sure to appeal to Prioleau’s fans but it left me feeling unsatisfied. There is very little to the story other than to briefly introduce the two characters that I assume are the main characters in “The necromancer’s apprentice” and would have made a bigger impact on me if I had already read that novella. Prioleau’s talent is on display in this story as it is well written so it is a success in that regard. I do not think that reading this story will win Prioleau any new fans but it definitely will not keep anyone from trying her works. I know that I plan to in the future.
