Denzel Washington has a proven track record in theaters so there is very few moments where he doesn’t deliver. There is just something about the guy that everyone loves besides just clear talent. In the trailers for his latest film Flight he displays his usual swagger and backed not only by an intriguing story, but the return to live action filmmaking with director Robert Zemeckis. The film is getting all kinds of Oscar buzz, but does it live up to the hype?
Flight follows an airline pilot who saves a flight from crashing only to have the investigation into the crash reveal something even more personal and painful. The trailers to this film seemed to tell a different story than what you actually get, which is great. Going in you expect it to be this uplifting story about a hero and the days following this truly amazing task he completes, but instead you are taken on a dark journey into a man's struggle with addiction. Without giving anything away, this movie is more about Denzel’s character and struggles than anything about the crash itself. Make no mistake, the crashing sequence is well executed, tense, and stressful to watch, but that is just the catalyst for the bigger crash of the film. There are some pretty dark human moments here that are very effective thanks to Washington’s brilliant performance. Once again he steps up his game to deliver another memorable Oscar worthy performance like only he can. The rest of the cast do a great job as well, especially John Goodman who is making a new name for himself this year with some truly brilliantly entertaining work.
From the trailer there were already high hopes for this film, but it just doesn’t do it justice. This film is miles better than you would have ever thought thanks to not only brilliant performances, but also an unexpectedly dark tale of depravity and addiction. If you have not had the chance to check this movie out you are really missing out on one of the best pictures this year.
