There are all kinds of animated films that come straight to video all the time and more often than not they sport a pretty impressive voice cast. Most of them end up being rip offs of a bigger budget film but every so often they put one out that kind of stands on its own. The latest A Monsterous Holiday brings together one of those casts including Brooke Shields, Jon Heder, Sean Astin, Matthew Lillard, Drake Bell, and Kyle Chandler but does it offer more than that?
A Monsterous Holiday follows a young inventor who reaches out to his neighbor for help with the upcoming science fair who just happens to be Doctor Frankenstein. Sadly he wasn’t home, but instead finds another teenager like himself who just happens to be Frankenstein’s monster. His new friend takes his place on the football field while he uses the doctor’s knowledge and lab to find an invention for the fair but inadvertently creates his own monster and it’s now up to them to save the town and Halloween. If this film seems a bit familiar it’s because they clearly used Jimmy Neutron as reference right down to his look. Looking past that the film plays entertaining enough but is clearly meant for a younger audience and will most likely do its job. The animation is actually better than expected for a straight to video release and works well for this particular story. It takes a bit to get past all of the comparisons to Jimmy Neutron, but once you do it manages to be a pretty fun little film.
This may not be the most original film out there, but it is one that is fun for the whole family and perfect for Halloween for those with kids not able to enjoy the splatter fest that are the norm. Most adults will dismiss this film, but you have to remember who these are made for and let them be the true judge, so if you have kids let them check out A Monsterous Holiday when it hits DVD on October 15th.
