A week ago, Dinah’s cousin Claire cut her wrists.
Five days ago, Dinah found Claire’s diary and discovered why.
Three days ago, Dinah stopped crying and came up with a plan.
Two days ago, she ditched her piercings and bleached the black dye from her hair.
Yesterday, knee socks and uniform plaid became a predator’s camouflage.
Today, she’ll find the boy who broke Claire.
By tomorrow, he’ll wish he were dead.
This was a pretty amazing book. It started with an intriguing mystery - who was the boy who drove Dinah's cousin to attempt suicide - and just rolled on from there. I was glued to this book, wanting to know what really happened, not wanting to believe that Brooks could be as bad as Dinah thought (I admit it, I really liked him!). It was a page turner in every sense of the word. I loved the mystery, I loved the dedication Dinah had toward trying to make things right for her cousin, and I really liked Dinah a lot. She is a strong character, loyal to a fault, but also willing to admit when she's wrong.
Here's what I didn't like: Dinah's mother. Nothing redeemable about this woman - she is a complete witch with a different spelling. How Dinah's father stayed married to her is a different sort of mystery. I also wasn't too crazy about Dinah's two friends from her previous life, Tabs and Brucey. I know they were just being good friends to Dinah, but sometimes the things they did - ostensibly in the name of helping her - really irritated me. I thought they came off as a little too mean and vindictive. That said, I liked them a lot more than the mother.
Some things I did like: There were some twists in there that were unexpected, proving that not everything is as it seems. As I said before, I really liked Dinah and Brooks - I think their characters were very well drawn and sometimes surprising. I liked the mystery and the way the story led you down false paths until you reached the true one. And I liked the way it ended. I thought it was a satisfying conclusion to the story.
All in all, a very satisfying read and I would highly recommend it.
