I decided it is time for another short fiction review and found a short horror story in tribute to Halloween as it is fast approaching. This chapbook is a part of the “Carnal Kingdoms” series by Adrianna White and is entitled “Portrait of a Succubus.”
Vivian and Jacob Pasternak live an unhappy life trapped inside of a loveless marriage. Jacob no longer finds Vivian attractive and has turned to spending his nights drinking and chasing women in an attempt to fill the hole in his heart. Vivian has become a bit of a packrat and fills her emotional void with material trinkets. When she goes into a strange shop, she is immediately drawn to a beautiful picture. Even better, the shopkeeper says that the picture was meant for her and sells it to her for next to nothing. Vivian is about to learn, however, that this is not an ordinary picture and that the cost of the picture may be much greater than the money she spent to buy it.
“Portrait of a Succubus” is not a great story but it was a quick and interesting read. I like to read stories about some of the mythical monsters that do not get very much attention in literature anymore so it is nice to see a story about a succubus rather than another vampire. There are definitely some erotica elements to the story, not surprising considering it is in the “Carnal Kingdom” series and is about a succubus, but that was not over the top. I am not sure what the other stories in the series are about, but I would definitely give another one of them a try.
