Podcast Review: Reasonable Faith

Summary:

Reasonable Faith is the teaching ministry of Dr. William Lane Craig who has carved an almost legendary name in the fields of philosophy and Christian Apologetics; and is well-known for his debates with some of the biggest names in the field of Atheism and Philosophical Naturalism.

The Reasonable Faith podcast, is a short, 30 minute podcast in which Dr. Craig and an associate interact on a random topic such as a recent news item, some event in which Dr. Craig was recently involved, or answering a listener’s e-mail. Dr. Craig uses this podcast in order to give a thumbnail response to the item they are discussing using his areas of expertise and his trademark logical thinking.

The Good:

This podcast is fun, extremely digestible and easy to listen to. Dr. Craig and his associate are relaxed and jovial throughout the discussion, and Dr. Craig is never bombastic or unnecessarily academic in his discussion so that practically anyone could get something out of each episode. The general feeling of the episodes is friendly and welcoming to the point that even someone who disagrees with Dr. Craig can see that he is doing his best to represent their viewpoint accurately even as he critiques it. The range of topics discussed always ensure that each episode will be interesting.

The Bad:

The atheist/skeptic podcast, Reasonable Doubts once described Reasonable Faith as the “bizarro” version of their broadcast. But whereas Reasonable Doubts is an hour-and-a-half broadcast that delves fairly deeply into the topics it discusses, addressing philosophical and topical arguments for their atheist viewpoint, Dr. Craig, who is otherwise very capable of a much deeper discussion, keeps his podcast short and fairly light. Consequently, Dr. Craig’s valuable skills as a philosopher are somewhat wasted in what could potentially be a tour de force for Christian Philosophy.

Now, Dr. Craig is undoubtedly an exceptionally busy man, and still manages to do a weekly podcast (Reasonable Doubts, by comparison, is once-a-month), so it’s probably too much to expect more than a half-hour segment out of him, but it is discouraging knowing that he could potentially bring more to each episode.

Conclusion:

With its short, entertaining, and rich content, Reasonable Faith is a good addition to anyone’s podcast feed, no matter their worldview. Dr. Craig covers topics that would suite practically every interest, and he does so in a manner that is not aggressive or offensive to those who might disagree with his philosophical mindset, but is well worth consideration. Reasonable Faith is available for download from the Reasonable Faith website, itunes, and certain Android Podcast applications.
