As the name suggests, at TranquiliTea, you will find a shop that not only sells teas, but offers a place to take a break from the busy, and sometimes hectic, world we live in. Owner, Colleen Cannon, understood that need when she established the retail store in downtown Plymouth eight years ago after working in the corporate world for over seventeen years. Seeking another career after being an Art Director for almost two decades, she began to build upon her interest in tea. Family health issues also influenced her renewed passion for the beverage.
In an interview last weekend, Cannon spoke about her family's history with cancer. "You can't change risk factors", says Cannon, "but you can change what you do". Coming from a tea-drinking household where Cannon remembers "always having cake and tea" growing up, she delved further into the health benefits of tea and decided to become a tea proprietor. She continues her tea education and has achieved Level 3 certification from the Specialty Tea Institute (STI).
The tea store offers a wide variety of loose tea and the majority are sold under the TranquiliTea brand. There are several black, green, oolong, white and herbal teas to choose from and guests can open sample jars, which line an entire wall of the store, and get an up-close sensory experience of any one they are interested in.
A few tea blends exclusive to TranquiliTea are Chocolate-Covered Strawberry black tea and Blackberry oolong.
Tranquilitea also sells Republic of Tea products and an assortment of tea accessories. In addition, they hold tea events throughout the year. A recent iced-tea "throw down" contest gave visitors a chance to vote on their favorite of four tea blend samples provided by the store. In the past, TranquiliTea has had events featuring Harney teas and Downton Abbey themed products.
Cannon, like her store, is inviting, warm and welcoming. For tea and comfort - and a whole lot more - visit TranquiliTea in downtown Plymouth.

Author's note: After meeting with Colleen Cannon last weekend, we discovered that both TranquiliTea and author, Barbara Gulley (Detroit Tea Examiner, Barb's TEA Shop) will be featured in the September/October issue of Tea Time Magazine as they feature Michigan tea businesses.
