When it comes to audio on the system, the Vita has both its ups and downs. The speakers on the portable system are good enough to play video games with but lack enough power for any high quality music or video.
To the test the audio quality on the system, a multitude of audio files were put onto the system. The first music format to be tested was the average mp3 file. The speakers made the music sound tinny and metallic and had no ability to generate enough sound to make the low end bass notes present in the music. The same results repeated with WAV and ATTRAC music files as well.
The full audio potential of the system could only be revealed with the use of high quality headphones. For this test Bose Quiet Comfort 15 headphones were used as well as Sennheiser HD 600 headphones. This is where the Vita really shines. The Vita quickly revealed the mp3 files to be low in quality and unpleasant. WAV and ATTRAC music played to their fullest potential. Every pitch could be heard but the bass always ended up on the strong side, often overpowering the other pitches in the music. Multiple genres were played to check if this situation occurred frequently and the bass was strong regardless of the genre.
Video quality proved to be tougher to test. While the Vita boasts 720p screen resolution, it was hard to find 720p videos that were compatible with the system. In the end only one file was able to be played with HD quality and that was a Kamen Rider Fourze video found at an undisclosed website. The video was placed on an iPhone, PSP go, Nintendo 3DS as well as the Vita in order to compare the system to its competitors in the market. The Vita wiped the floor when compared to the 3DS and PSP go. Detail the Vita displayed on each character within the video could not be found at all in both systems. The iPhone and the Vita had the same video quality; details found on the video using one system could be found on the other.
While the Vita had amazing video quality, its speaker system was found to be lacking. To enjoy music, it is apparent that headphones are needed.
