PlayStation Vita review part 2: operating system and user experience

The operating system on the PlayStation Vita manages to be simplistic yet beautiful, something that is hard to find in a world ruled by cheap imitation OS.  Everything on the Vita is organized into applications including the games themselves. The apps are represented as colorful, circular buttons that move with each gesture on the screen. PSP games as well as Vita games have their own individual icons on the screen, they don’t vanish when a game is removed allowing the user to keep a digital tab of each game owned. The apps can be moved and reorganized to the user’s preference allowing deeper personalization than its predecessor the PlayStation Portable.

It takes no work to become adapted to the Vitas new menu system. By a simple swipe upwards or downwards, one can go from page to page. The system boasts strong multitasking ability as well. Gamers can stop the game, turn on their favorite song and return to their game in a matter of seconds. While their music is on, the games own background music is deactivated; only the sound effects will remain.

Transferring data from a computer to the Vita is a simple procedure. Plug in the proprietary cord to the computer and attach the portable system. The Content Manager application instantly begins to bounce toward the screen and back. Pressing the app brings the Vita to a menu equipped with several options. After selecting PC to Vita transfer and the type of media, a list of compatible files will appear. Simply pick what files to transfer and touch the Copy button. The Vita does the rest.

The new OS on the Vita is one of Sony’s biggest successes. Future portable consoles should take note on the systems easy to use and beautiful menu styles.
