This gorgeous book reflects the lush beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula it tells us about. For anyone who visits the Yucatan, it is well worth the investment to buy this book first. And, for anyone who just is interested in tropical plants, trees, flowers and herbs, it’s both informative and beautifully presented with clearly written text written by Svetlana Aleksandroff and fabulous photos taken by Vasily Aleksandroff.
There is an extensive amount of information presented in the most appealing and interesting way with accompanying photographs that are filled with vitality and beauty. Divided into five chapters which include Trees of the Forest, Fruit of the Jungle, Sacred Plants, Roadside Plants and Garden Plants, there are also examples of the various crafts of this area as well as other areas of Mexico such as Oaxaca. We are not only told about the various plants, trees and flowers, but have their important medicinal qualities explained in a simple, easy to understand manner with references to their practical application. Even if you’re not an herbalist, anyone can pick up information about the healing qualities of a lot of familiar fruits and vegetables that are found in your local health food store or supermarket.
I like keeping this book close by as a source and reference for the healing properties and applications of many of the plants illustrated in this book. But I also enjoy picking it up and seeing the fabulous photos which inspire me to explore the material further.
