The mystery continues as movies featuring an all-star cast never get the release you would normally expect. More often than not it shows with the film itself, but every so often you end up with one that really comes out of nowhere and works pretty well. Lay The Favorite features the cast aspect featuring Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joshua Jackson, and Vince Vaughn, but will it be the one that bets against the house and win?
Lay the Favorite follows an odds-maker running a small-time sports gambling enterprise who hires a former stripper that turns his world upside down. Can her knack for numbers and connections change the business forever? While this isn’t one of those surprisingly brilliant films by any means it still manages to deliver a pretty entertaining story. Most of the time with these kinds of film you only get brief cameos by stars like Bruce Willis, but here is one of the major players that made this film a fun surprise. Pretty much every actor in this film plays a fairly large part making this one of the few movies to come along like this that advertises the cast accurately. The story is pretty simple, but clever enough to keep it funny as well as emotional all at once. The delivery of the dialogue is what keeps this film working thanks to the quick witted delivery. As a whole the film doesn’t deliver anything new to the industry, but does make for a fun little story thanks to the great cast.
While most straight to video features with the A-list cast usually screams warning for wondering what was wrong to make it get shoved onto the video shelf, Lay the Favorite actually delivers a pretty good quality film. With other films of this kind that Willis has appeared in he seems to phone it in, but here he seems to really having a great time and it shows in the final product.
