Pillsbury Parmesan and Basil, Garlic and Herb Artisan Bread Mixes


Many of us absolutely love the taste (not to mention the smell!) of custom-designed baked bread, but not the process of making it.

This is the new Pillsbury Garlic & Herb Artisan Bread Mix. OK

Pillsbury has solved that dilemma in a tasty and time-effective way with their new product line of three artisan bread mixes: Parmesan & Basil, Garlic & Herb and Country White.

I recently tried the Parmesan & Basil, and the Garlic & Herb.

Both were delicious!

The baking experience is only 40 minutes from start to finish (exactly what the package states), using the very easy-to-follow instructions. And you'll just need some hot or hot tap water and flour (for dusting).

Please Note: For those of you with kids who may want to help, I would recommend that older children participate only (unless younger kids will be closely supervised; I say this because while the baking is easy to do, it can still be a messy process when kneading the dough. And if things go amok, you can end up cleaning half the dough from the children, not to mention yourself!).

These new bread mixes are currently available nationwide; retail price is $2.49 for each box.

I not only ate half the bread "as is" (with meat, spaghetti, chili and rice with gravy), I also made some crust for homemade pizza, bread sticks and tried the following recipes:

Cheesy Chili Bread Bowls

Prep Time: 50 min
Cook Time: 20 min
Ready Time: 70 min
Makes 4 servings

Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
1 box Pillsbury® Garlic & Herb Artisan Bread Mix
1 (4.5 oz.) can chopped green chiles
3/4 cup hot water (110° to 120°F)
1 large egg
1 tablespoon cold water
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
3 cups prepared chili, warmed
Sour cream, for garnish
Chopped green onion, for garnish

Preparation Directions

HEAT oven to 425°F. Coat 15x10x1-inch baking pan with no-stick cooking spray.
COMBINE bread mix, yeast packet and green chiles in large bowl. Add hot water. Stir until soft dough forms. Knead on lightly floured surface 50 times. Divide dough into 4 equal-sized balls. Place on prepared pan. Let rest 12 minutes.

WHISK egg and cold water until blended. Brush on each bread. Bake for 19 to 21 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire rack. Cool 10 minutes. Cut crown off top of each bread. Hollow bread out leaving 1/2-inch thick wall to create bread bowl. Place on serving plate. Fill with 2 tablespoons cheese and chili. Garnish with an additional 2 tablespoons cheese, sour cream and green onion. Repeat with remaining bread bowls.

TIP: Bread bowls can also be filled with your favorite soups or dips.

TIP For FREEZING BREAD BOWLS: Cool bread completely. Do not hollow out bread. Wrap in plastic wrap. Place in large resealable plastic bag. Store in freezer 2 to 3 weeks. Thaw completely before using.

And: Parmesan-Basil Soft Pretzels

Prep Time: 25 min
Cook Time: 15 min
Ready Time: 75 min
Makes 16 servings

1 package Pillsbury® Parmesan & Basil Artisan Bread Mix
2 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup very warm water (110° to 120°F)
1 large egg, plus 1 egg yolk, at room temperature, divided
Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon cold water
1 tablespoon coarse salt
1 1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds or sesame seeds (optional)
Dipping sauce like creamy mustard, marinara sauce or cheese sauce, if desired (optional)

Preparation Directions
COMBINE bread mix, yeast packet and sugar in large bowl. Stir in warm water. Stir in 1 egg. Knead on lightly floured surface 5 minutes. Let rest 5 minutes.

HEAT oven to 375°F. Coat baking sheets with no-stick cooking spray. Divide dough into 16 equal pieces. Cover dough to prevent from drying out. Roll and gently stretch each piece, one at a time, into an 18-inch rope. To shape into pretzels, curve ends of rope to make a circle, crossing ends of rope at top. Twist ends together, then lay over bottom of circle. Place on prepared baking sheets.

WHISK egg yolk and cold water until blended. Brush on pretzels. Combine coarse salt and poppy or sesame seeds if using; sprinkle over pretzels. Let rest 5 minutes. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from baking sheets to wire rack to cool. Serve warm with dipping sauce if desired.
