Picture Atlantic: 'Digital Tension' (2012)

"Digital Tension" by Picture Atlantic is an energy fueled Pop album with high production values.

It can be argued that "The Beatles" have an influence on all Pop music today, while this may be true, you can hear it a little more in "Digital Tension". Something about the structures and background instruments used ring out with a Beatlesesque vibe. It's never something that's in the foreground, but it's still often times present.

What finds its way into the foreground is a rich mix of electric guitar, a very cool bass that exceeds expectations and sometimes is the main feature of a song (example: "White Knight"), and a strong male vocal.

The before mentioned "White Knight" is actually my favorite of the album, as it is more daring (incorporating some ethereal synth lines with bass), and just has an all around cooler sound to it than surrounding tracks. A good cruising song.

All in all this is a pretty by the numbers Pop album... with little room for anything outside currently established Pop boundaries. With straightforward relationship and sometimes semi-political lyrics, and (image-wise) stoic faces... I can't help but feel this band takes themselves just a tad too seriously. It's not that the music is bad, it just seems too careful... they need to lighten up, have a little more fun, get occasionally risky, and stop buying their own hype.

"Digital Tension" by Picture Atlantic is available via their Bandcamp page.
