The Piccini family has been making wines in the Chianti region of Italy since 1882. As one of Tuscany’s big players they have began to spread their reach. In the Veneto in Italy’s north east they are crafting a dry crisp Pinot Grigio that shows that carefully sourced grapes in the hands of a skilled winemaker, Antonella Conti, can make the varietal shine.
Piccini, Pinot Grigio, Delle Venezie, 2013 is pale straw yellow in color. It has crisp citrus aromas up front, especially lemon peel with hints of melon and tropical fruits with wet slate in the background. The palate pretty much follow the nose and the crisp citrus acidity leads to a nice medium finish.
This wine is great to enjoy on its own on a balmy summer evening. A cheese soufflé or creamy chicken dish would love the acidity to cut through its richness to get your palate ready for the next bite.
