Phil Vassar at Wisconsin State Fair

Thursday night, July 31, Phil Vassar got the Wisconsin State Fair started at the Potawatomi Main Stage, where he played following Maggie Rose. Vassar is not only a talented singer and pianist, but is probably best known for his incredible songwriting. His hit singles have reached the top 10 on the charts both performed by himself and artists such as Tim McGraw and Jo Dee Messina. He kept his large group of fans dancing and singing Thursday night as he played hit after hit.

Vassar could easily play for hours on end and still not cover all his singles, and yet he manages to pick a positive, upbeat selection while incorporating other all-time hits from artists such as Queen and The Four Seasons. Even with his own impressive body of work, he makes incorporates other great artists, making his concerts a general celebration of great feel-good music. He even set time aside to showcase his guitarist Jay's talents as a guitarist and singer (who sang "Whole Lotta Love"- orig. Led Zeppelin, "Your Love"- orig. The Outfields, and "Jessie's Girl"- orig. Rick Springfield).

Phil Vassar is a long-time Wisconsin fairgrounds veteran (most frequently at Summerfest), and yet he always manages to keep his performances fresh and exciting year after year. Even with many of his set's songs being several years old, he maintains a high level of energy whether he's standing on the piano, jumping across stage, or tickling the ivories. Vassar shows incredible musicianship in his writing, singing, and playing, and is always a pleasure to see. A quiet, still audience member is a rare find at a Phil Vassar concert, and this was no exception.

"It's good to be home, y'all!"
