Emcee and producer Pharoahe Monch, one half of group Organized Konfusion next to emcee Prince Po, has been and remains one of the greatest free thinking artists in hip hop. His latest, the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder album, keeps in line with his established brand of truthful social commentary and complex lyrical wizardry. Once again, Monch is not afraid to push buttons with his content and production style if it has the desirous result of blooming mass awareness. He examines the chaotic societal system around us to show that the solutions do not include retreat, giving up, or suicide but instead free, individual thought, dreaming, and persistence. Inspired by some of his past, character-trying spells, PTSD has Pharoahe Monch vicious and hard one moment then understanding and revolutionary the next. It is the type of material we are used to from him but that everyone can use more of. It is what happens when one shuns the mainstream and looks inward. It is an album that can truly help us all.
