The combining of Shiraz/Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend said to be unique to Australia where winemakers use Shiraz to fill out the mid palate where Cabernet Sauvignon is said to drop off, something often referred as 'the donut effect'. Taking this uniquely Australian blend and having it made by Australia's most iconic winery, Penfolds, during what was a exceptional vintage for the region in South Australia where Koonunga Hill is situated and you can expect something pretty special.
Made from 66% Shiraz/Syrah and 34% Cabernet Sauvignon this wine is quite dark in color, almost cola like with a cherry red hue. It has a rich aroma of dark fruits, currants, spices and chocolate. On the palate it is juicy and generous but also displays great balance. There is a faint hint of a grape lolly taste but thankfully the wine is never jammy.
This wine delivers well beyond its price point and can be found for as low as $7.99 at Binny's but is more commonly found for between $10-$12 a bottle. Ready to drink now through to 2017 and pairs well with BBQ meats, grilled vegetables, cheese and a variety of casseroles.
