They Came Together

If you like “Saturday Night Live” and “The Office”, then you’ll love “They Came Together” starring Paul Rudd (“I Love You Man”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation"). We were fortunate to attend a private screening at Lionsgate to get a sneak peak before this Sundance Film Festival hit is released this Friday June 27, 2014, in select theaters and VOD (Video on Demand).

In this NYC-set comedy, Paul Rudd (Joel) and Amy Poehler (Molly) play the adorable couple who are telling their story to Bill Hader (“Saturday Night Live”) and Ellie Kemper (“The Office”). Despite trying to escape “their corny story” several times, there is no going home in this script.

When Joel and Molly first meet, their relationship is very similar to Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in “You’ve Got Mail” where the big, bad company wants to overtake the mom and pop stores. The tension between Joel’s evil candy corporation and Molly’s eccentric little shop naturally results in some very funny moments inbetween break-ups, make-ups and ex-loves.

One of the best parts of this film is the amazing all-star comedy cast who add levity to every scenario. Along with making NYC a character, the cast includes Ed Helms (“The Office”), Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”), Kenan Thompson (“SNL”), Jack McBrayer (“30 Rock”), Jason Mantzoukas (“Parks and Recreation”), Max Greenfield (“New Girl”), Noureen DeWulf (“Anger Management”), Christopher Meloni (“Veep”), Melanie Lynskey (“Two and a Half Men”), Michael Shannon (“Man of Steel”) and more.

We’re not going to reveal any spoilers, but will say that this movie takes a new twist on romantic comedy storytelling. There were continual laughs at the Lionsgate screening so maybe we’ll see more writers using this format? When asked about the co-writers (Michael Showalter and David Wain) new “Romance” format, David explained, “Our idea was to mix this romance story with humor – so you could almost call this a Romantic-Comedy, so to speak.”

What made this film unique is that it often felt like an extended “SNL” skit or awkward soap opera moment, resulting in the audience breaking into serious laughter. Maybe the story feels this way because Director/Co-Writer/Executive Producer David Wain is a Writer and Executive Producer for the Emmy Award winning series “Children’s Hospital”? Maybe it’s because he graduated from NYU film school in 1991 where he probably met half the cast? And maybe it’s because the brilliant cast is so funny IRL that they added improv to the script?

David Wain’s co-written and directed five feature films with the most notable being “Role Models” (2008). He’s also an actor, who plays a LOL cameo role that will surprise you in “They Came Together.” Don’t miss this new type of romance movie with guaranteed LOLs from some of comedy’s best.
