Due to prior commitments, “Jesus (played by Luke Whitmire) was Not Available”. Thank God that First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida had Peter Lake, who gave a marvelous performance as Jesus, in the 2014 JAX Passion Play. It’s also wonderful to know that Jesus Christ is only a prayer away.
The character of Jesus may have been M.I.A. because this year’s presentation was done on Resurrection (Easter) weekend instead of normally being held on Palm Sunday weekend, nonetheless, the performance was magnificent. Everyone serving at First Baptist Church were friendly, helpful and wore a smile.
Speaking of sublime, Sandi Patty gave a stellar, goose-bumping rendition of her world-renowned hymn, “We Shall Behold Him”, which was the title of this year’s JAX FBC Passion Play. There is also a snipped of “How Great Thou Art”. The entire cast (including a live lamb & a donkey) added to the God-given creative genius of director Dr. Steve Bowersox, Executive Pastor of Worship at FBC.
The costumes were vibrant and periodic. The stage sets were believable and well-constructed. The choir from FBC blended singing and choreography together with the extensive cast of townsfolk actors. The elaborate orchestra (including harp, flutes, violins, horns, percussions, and the usual instruments) gave a full, rich sound in the auditorium and elaborated the effects of the play upon the audience. Everything was topnotch as you will hear in the link above, and see in the slide show also displayed above.
You may want to subscribe to Ms. “V”s columns to find out when Sandi Patty and her special guest will be back in Jacksonville, Florida later in the year. And don’t neglect to add the 2015 JAX Passion Play to your calendars sometimes around late March or early May.
