For those who enjoy paranormal reality shows, this book is a must read. It was written by Ryan Buell, founder of the Paranormal Research Society.
Buell, who has had medical problems lately, tells the story of how he became interested in the paranormal. When he was a kid he was tortured by a demon. To this day he refuses to speak or write its name. Ryan was so traumatized by the events of his childhood that when he started attending Penn. State University he started a paranormal group to try to help others when they needed to find answers.
Buell goes on to tell how the club did their first investigations and how the show came about.
Then we get a real treat as Ryan reveals behind the scenes of some of the episodes of the first few seasons. He tells about what scenes were cut short and what happened during those scenes. He talks about some of the other members of the group. He talks about family, friends and having no social life during the first few seasons of doing the show and attending college.
During the course of the book Ryan reveals some personal information about himself. He is bisexual and as most viewers know, he is Catholic. The conflict he felt between his sexuality and his faith were painful, but with the help of a priest he worked it out. He is comfortable in his own skin.
The show's relationship with Lorraine Warren is spoken about fondly. Surprisingly, Ryan reveals that he doesn't put a lot of stock into psychic mediums. The show does features them, Ryan isn't in complete control. The higher ups of the production company had their say as well.
It's too bad that "Paranormal State" is no longer in production, but there are still reruns, mostly on Bio and A&E.
I liked this book. If Ryan is as sweet and kind as he comes off in the book, he would be someone I would want to be friends with.
I would have liked to have heard more about the psychics that Ryan didn't particularly like on the show. I would like to know how he feels about Chip Coffey.
Ryan's medical problems have sidelined him a lot, hopefully when he is on solid ground again, we will write another book recounting how he handled his health crisis and what got him through it.
